So, I know it has been forever since I posted, but until this week I’ve led a boring life.
Recap of before this week: I did make a trip to the National Portrait Gallery, so that is marked off my to do list. A large group of us went out for Mexican food that night. And that’s been the only exciting thing that I can remember right now. Last weekend, I was pretty much a bum the entire time. I kept trying to get people to go out with me and no one would. I spent some time at the Wheaton Mall and dropped off a library book. Other than that, I bummed around. Took a walk down the street to the diner, pharmacy, grocery store and coffee shop we didn’t know existed till a few weeks ago. Heather didn’t come to visit–we’ll leave that their.
At work I’ve just been doing random tasks. Name tags, filing, tallying evaluations and some website content stuff. Nothing to wild and crazy. I did get to blow out candles on a cake for the 50th anniversary of center.
On Monday there was a Metro crash. The red line is the line that I take to get into the city, but the accident was on the opposite end of the line. Three of my roommates needed to take the red line to get home and were stranded at Union Station. So they called me to the rescue and I traversed downtown D.C. traffic and we all survived! This was the first time I’d driven in downtown so I was pretty happy about this.
But this week I had my last group and they were 4-Hers. Monday and Tuesday I finished tallying and did the wrap up stuff for my group. They arrived Wednesday morning and literally they pulled in, I jumped on the bus and we took off for the National Cathedral. Which started the beginning of a long but pretty awesome group. I was on the front of the bus talking to the chaperons. I had given the kids some info on me and where we were etc. and was now going over some stuff with the chaps and giving directions to the bus driver. This led to the moment when my eyes had to of lighted up…the kids started singing camp songs! The chaps apologized for it and said, that’s our group of counselors back there and some of them just got out of camp. I told them not to apologize that it had kind of just made my day! I have tried to get all my groups to sing, and now I had one that started on their own.
This group had a crazy packed schedule. I actually had two bus drivers, they switched mid week. My first driver knew the city much better than the second, which meant I had to give directions pretty much constantly. But they were both great guys who listened (most the time). The first driver actually owns the company. He told me that in the time he has been bringing groups to D.C. in general and staying here, I was the best tour guide he had ever had. I knew how to give directions and alternate routes if something was backed up. He said he was very impressed with this and told me this, and apparently all my chaperons and the relief driver too, because they all told me. This made me very happy because I’ve always been good with directions, but I did learn the city and that is something I wanted to do so that I could give good directions.
The group had spent 2 days in New York before coming to D.C. and we had late nights every night so they never caught up on sleep. But they kids were amazing. I felt bad because there schedule was so packed they didn’t get to spend a lot of time at anyone place. I think they would have liked to do less and see more. They had a heavy walking trip and that is rough too, especially with the heat. I got a little sun burnt one day and I’d tried to stay under tress shaded most of the day. I also got to go see Oklahoma at Tobys again. Good show.
Friday we went to the Marine Corps Parade. Unfortunately we were in chairs which made it difficult to see because of tall people in front of us, but it was still a great show. While we were waiting to get in though, a storm rolled in. It was a 15minute heavy downpour with high winds. A family was killed driving near the 4-H Center from a falling branches. A tree was uprooted near the Jefferson Memorial. We weathered the storm standing under an overpass. Luckily the Marines heard that the storm was coming and got us there right before the storm hit. Unfortunately, our driver was not able to go to the show with us because of his arthritis, after the storm hit he didn’t want to chance being out in the rain. He did walk up and listen to some of the show, but couldn’t get in the gates after it started. But, while we were standing in line, I talked with a few of the kids that I hadn’t got to know that well yet and we were teaching each other new songs. Yesterday was the first chance I got to go sit with the kids on the bus, besides the ones in the very front. They were singing and I joined in from the front and I heard a few go ohmigod she knows the song! So then, I led a few songs and when the driver was to a point he knew where he was going, I moved to the back of the bus to sit with the ones that were leading the songs.
After we got back to the Center I prepped for my workshop. I don’t really like doing a workshop on the last night, just because with this one, how a bill becomes a law, we’ve already talked about so much of the stuff. But, I started it out by doing a team building activity (corporate maze) and the kids really enjoyed it. They had never done it before, nor had my chaps (they said they were going to take it back with them). We then went through the workshop, and though I didn’t think it was my best ever, but they liked it and said that it really did help the understand congress a lot better. After it was over they filled out evaluations and gave me a small gift of things from Missouri. Then we sang a few songs for one last time and they went to pack and load some stuff on the bus.
I got up this morning and said goodbye to them. They pulled out around 8:00am. It was sad to see them leave. I really really enjoyed this group. Even with the few downsides, it was an awesome week and a great group to go out on. YAY for 4-Hers on WOW groups. After they left, I went back to sleep until about 1pm. I needed that sleep. I really felt like I was at camp this week with the schedule I was keeping. I then just bummed around for the rest of the day.
So, now to the maybe part of the wrapping up…I have to write my debrief and tally evaluations and that wraps up my time as a WOW PA. Jason is flying in on Wednesday and is planning on driving home with me on the 6th…but I may be staying in D.C. for an extra 4-6 weeks. I have to speak with someone tomorrow to determine if this will be happening or not. If it is, then I told Jason I would pay for his return flight home.
I’m sorry to those readers who this does not work into your plans. I know I had personally planned on spending the month of July in the pool. But I do have student loans to pay. My car, oh how did I forget that part…My car is PAID OFF!!! I made the last payment last weekend. Anyway, I have bills. And an additional 4-6 weeks of having income, no matter how small is a good idea. And, it gives me 4-6 more weeks of exploring D.C. a city that has taken a small part of my heart. I don’t know if I could live here permanently, but I know I could stand a few more weeks here. And well, I’m taking the attitude of if its meant to be it will, and this has kind of fallen into my lap. AND 4-6 more weeks of trying to find another job. Actually, keep your fingers crossed for me. No more details for right now, but maybe more this week as I find things out.
Ok. Enough for now. Its long, but the past 4 days rocked and I had a few other random notes to add in. Lets hope I get good news and update again this week!
P.S. I got a new roommate. She moved stuff in Friday, but no one saw her until today as her mom is in town too.
